Cane Cutters Bats Struck by Lightning

June 23, 2015 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Acadiana Cane Cutters News Release

On a hot afternoon in northeast Texas, the Cane Cutters came in 5-5 in their last 10 games, and only a game and a half behind the Brazos Valley Bombers.

All the talk coming into the matchup was about the Pumpjack's starting pitcher, Jace Vine, because of his upcoming division one university selection.

Coaches from all over, A&M, OK State, etc. were in the house to watch Vine go 3 innings, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts, on 0 earned runs.

Enrique Perez took the reins from Vine, and did not miss a beat.

His adversary, the Hattiesburg native, Kirk McCarty, made his final appearance of the season, and made the most of it, giving up 1 ER on 7 hits with 6 strikeouts in 8 innings.

The Cane Cutters were aggressive at the plate but were not able to consistently cash in with runners in scoring position.

The Notre Dame outfielder, Zak Kutsulis, continued his hot streak at the leadoff spot with his speed on the bases and defensive prowess in center field.

However, the game moved at a lightning fast pace with a multitude of fantastic defensive plays, including a pinpoint throw from Argo in center to cut down Short at the plate in the 6th.

Taylor Braley had another stellar evening in the hot corner, making a couple highlight reel plays, including a bare handed snag to rob the bunt attempt by Brandon Grudenzelanek.

The Arizona import, Ziegler, had 2 of the 5 Acadiana hits on the evening.

The pitcher's duel came to a halt in the bottom of the 8th when TJ Friedl came around to score on the base hit by Niko Buentello.

From there, it was a done deal.

The lock down closeout man, Tyler Adams, came into the ballgame and got the 3 out save.

Pumpjacks get their first win of the season, by the score of 1-0.

The Cane Cutters have their brief one game win streak ended and will give it another go Wednesday night at 7 at Irwin Field.
