Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Rochester starter Tyler Duffey did not allow an earned run in 7.1 innings pitched and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter as the Red Wings defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-2, on Monday night at McCoy Stadium in front of 5,060 fans in the opener of a four-game series.
Rochester trailed 2-1 after five innings but scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth and seventh innings against Pawtucket reliever Edwin Escobar (0-1). Danny Santana's RBI double in the seventh put the Red Wings ahead to stay, and Rochester won for the first time in five tries this season at McCoy.
Duffey (2-4) permitted just five hits and struck out six while walking only one. The PawSox scored two unearned runs against him in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two separate Red Wings throwing errors. Duffey left with runners on the corners and only one out in the eighth, but lefty Ryan O'Rourke struck out Carlos Peguero.
Right-hander Mark Hamburger then entered to face Luke Montz, whom he struck out looking on a close 3-2 pitch. Closer A.J. Achter worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to finish the victory and record his 11th save of the season.
With the score tied at 2, Escobar allowed a leadoff double to Eric Farris in the seventh inning. Then after Doug Bernier sacrificed Farris to third, Santana drilled his go-ahead RBI double into the left-field corner. Rochester had scored the tying run in the sixth against Escobar on a fielder's choice grounder by Reynaldo Rodriguez.
Zeke Spruill made his first start of the season for Pawtucket after 20 relief appearances and allowed just one run and four hits in five innings of work. Danny Ortiz's sacrifice fly in the fourth broke up a scoreless contest through the first three innings. Spruill did not walk a batter and struck out two.
After a throwing error on the Rochester first-baseman Rodriguez plated Jackie Bradley, Jr. with the tying run in the bottom of the fourth, Garin Cecchini gave the PawSox the lead with a two-out RBI single to left against Duffey.
Jonathan Aro and Matt Barnes each pitched a scoreless inning for Pawtucket after Escobar was pulled from the game. Farris (2-for-3, two doubles, sacrifice bunt) was the only player in the game with multiple hits.
Game two of the series is slated for a 7:05pm first pitch on Tuesday night. Right-hander Keith Couch (3-7, 5.17) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Red Wings counter with righty Greg Peavey (NR).
