Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB -- Former Tiger defenceman Tomas Kundrátek will return to Europe to continue his professional career after 5 seasons in North America. Kundratek will play for KHL Dinamo Riga, based in Latvia.

After a trade from the New York Rangers to the Washington Capitals organization, Kundratek had been very close from making the big club but spent majority of his time in Hershey, playing for the AHL affiliate Bears. In 2008 he was drafted by the Rangers as the highest-ranking Czech born player, going in the third round, 90th overall.

Kundratek had spent time in the NHL with the Captials seeing 5 games in 2011-12 and then another 25 in 2012-13, recording 7 points in over that span.

Kundratek will skate for the Dinamo Riga KHL team, which finished last in their division during the 14-15 campaign, sporting a 22-30-5-3 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Kundratek's agent spoke on the signing from Hershey to Riga (translated from website denik.cz) "Tomas has agreed to cooperate (sign) with Riga, which for him was very interested. We considered other options, but decided that Dinamo will give Kundrátek plenty of gaming space. He should be one of the busiest defenders. Tomas also has a small child and settled with regard to the family. Riga is a nice town, this also played a role."

Kundratek spent 2 seasons with the Tigers during 2008-09 and 2009-10, playing in 116 games, netting 58 points. He also appeared in 23 playoff games for the Tabbies, netting 12 points along the way.

The Tigers wish Tomas and his family a smooth transition to the KHL and best of luck next season!
