Cannons Rally for Last Second Victory

June 21, 2015 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Boston Cannons News Release

BOSTON, MA (June 20, 2015) - The Boston Cannons came away with a thrilling 19-18 victory in the final seconds at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday night. The win brings the Cannons back above .500 before their return to Gillette Stadium next weekend.

Max Seibald was the Coca Cola Player of the game after a 5 point night including the game winner with 6 seconds left. Brodie Merrill sent him the go ahead pass after Jordan Burke made a great save to keep the Cannons alive, and Florida falls to 1-8 on the year, while the Cannons improve to 5-4.

The opening minute of the game saw both sides put points on the scoreboard, as Will Manny scored the first goal followed quickly by Lyle Thompson for Florida. Two minutes later the Launch took its first lead of the night with a goal from Casey Powell. After a few minutes of scoreless action, the Cannons knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal from Max Seibald.

With less than 4 to play in the first, Scott Ratliff scored for Boston, followed by Buczek to put the Launch back up by one. Buczek added his second-straight goal for the final tally of the quarter to give the Launch a 2-goal lead heading in to the half.

In the second quarter, Kevin Buchanan and Ryan Tucker scored for the Cannons early to tie the game at 5-5. The Launch got its first goal of the quarter from Lao-Gosney to retake the lead, but not even 20 seconds later Josh Hawkins scored for Boston to tie it back up at 6-6.

Boston then scored a pair of goals within 10 seconds from Wells Stanwick and Buchanan to tie the score 8-8. With 19 seconds left, Max Seibald scored to put Boston up 9-8 heading into halftime.

The Launch scored the first goal of the second half in the opening minute as McArdle tied the game at 9-9. The Cannons continued to fight, however, and newcomer Josh Hawkins scored just a minute later to put the Cannons back on top.

After a few goals from the Launch, Boston ended the 3-0 run with a goal from Owen Byle with 5:22 left in the quarter, and tied the game up a minute later with a goal from Seibald. With 1:18 left in the quarter the Cannons retook the lead at 13-12 off a goal from Rob Emery.

Boston's run extended into the final quarter of the game as Blye and Brent Adams scored in the first minute to put the Launch down 15-12. The back and forth battle continued until it was tied up again 17-17 before emery scored for the Cannons to once again take the lead. Florida once again tied it up before Seibald found the back of the net in thrilling fashion with 6 seconds to go and to seal the victory for Boston.

Florida could not get the defensive stops they needed down the stretch, and the Cannons refused to back down. It was a back and forth battle all night long, but the Cannons came away with an important win as well as some much needed momentum heading back home to play Chesapeake.

The Cannons return to Gillette on June 28th to play the Bayhawks at 4pm. It is a special Father's Day game where the Cannons are offering a ticket package to play catch with the family on Gillette's turf post game.
