Houston Dynamo FC News Release
Maximiliano Urruti and Gaston Fernandez each scored as the Portland Timbers secured a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on Saturday at Providence Park.
The Dynamo next face FC Dallas in the Texas Derby at 8 p.m. CT on Friday, June 26 at Toyota Stadium. The Dynamo return home to meet the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, June 30 in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
The Dynamo appeared to seize a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Raul Rodriguez volleyed a corner kick from Alexander Lopez into the side of the net, but referee Baldomero Toledo disallowed the goal, apparently calling a foul on Ricardo Clark as Jorge Villafana ran into the Dynamo midfielder while tracking Rodriguez.
The Timbers capitalized on a set piece of their own in the 34th minute. Villafana delivered a precise free kick from the far left flank and Urruti rose alone in the box to snap a header from 10 yeards inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric was alert four minutes later as Alvas Powell's cross floated toward the corner of the goal and Deric backpedalled and dove to parry the shot away.
Another decision by Toledo went the Timbers way in the 59th minute. After a corner kick, the referee awarded Portland a penalty kick after David Horst and Norberto Paparatto jousted for position in the box. Fernandez took the penalty and slotted his chance to the opposite side of Deric's dive for a two-goal lead.
The Dynamo increased the pressure after the introduction of substitutes Rob Lovejoy, Alex and Mauro Manotas. Houston created several chances, including a deft pass from Lopez that Lovejoy let pass into the path of DaMarcus Beasley, who slipped as he struck an errant shot from eight yards.
Later, Ricardo Clark juggled a cross as he fell onto his back and still used an overhead kick that had goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey beat, but struck the top of the crossbar.
