Bravehearts Late Rally Falls Short

June 18, 2015 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Worcester Bravehearts News Release

The Worcester Bravehearts fell behind early in tonight's game against North Shore Navigators, as they couldn't rally from a five-run deficit in the 9th inning, ultimately falling by a score of 7-5 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The Bravehearts plated three runs in the ninth, but finished the game with the tying run stranded on first. The loss marks the 10th straight loss for the Bravehearts.

Worcester finds themselves in a bit of a rough patch to start the year, and giving up runs early in games has been quite a problem during this stretch. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, Bravehearts pitcher Jonathan Mulford (Massapequa, NY/Adelphi) gave up three runs of only which one was earned to the Navigators. Giovanni Dingcong (Brooklyn, NY/St. Thomas Aquinas) hit a triple to driving in the first run, followed by Ricky Smith (Weymouth, MA/Merrimack) with an RBI-double to extend the lead.

Mulford allowed two more runs in the 5th inning off a pair of singles with runners on, pushing the Naigators lead to a score of 5-1. Mulford finished the night allowing fives runs (three earned) on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched while striking out seven and walking two. Cole O'Oconnor (BBN/Bedford, MA) was the pitcher of record, going 3 1/3 innings of relief, not allowing a hit and striking out four.

The Navigators added two insurance runs in the 8th inning off a sacrifice fly from Chad Martin (Rowley, MA/Bowdoin College) and on a throwing error by Bravehearts catcher Alex Sanchez (New York, NY/Galveston) allowing an unearned run to score.

Those two runs would play out to be quite important as the Bravehearts rallied in the ninth with three runs. With runners at the corners and two outs, Michael Logsdon (West Virginia Weslayan/Bridgeport, WV) grounded out to end the game. Speros Varinos (Tufts University/Middleton, MA) picked up the save for the Navigators.

The Worcester Bravehearts head to Connecticut to take on the Bristol Blues tomorrow night, June 18th at 7:05 p.m, looking to pick up a much needed win. They return home on Friday, June 19th to play host to the Seacoast Mavericks at 7:05 p.m. at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. Tickets for all future Bravehearts games are available at the Hanover Insurance Field box office, online at worcesterbravehearts.com, or by calling 508-438-3773.
