New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats split the Wednesday doubleheader against the Bowie Baysox - winning Game 1 by the score of 13-4 and dropping Game 2 1-0.

The Rock Cats flexed their muscles in Game One, hitting three home runs en route to the nine run victory. SS Trevor Story, CF Noel Cuevas and C Tom Murphy all left the yard during the impressive offensive showing.

New Britain went up 1-0 after one inning of play on the back of a solo home run from Story. The infielder launched LHP Tim Berry's offering high over the wall in left and now has ten homers on the season.

The Baltimore affiliate responded with two runs in the second to make it a 2-1 contest. DH Brandon Snyder led off the frame with a single off of Rock Cats starter RHP Shane Carle and scored in the following at-bat - a triple off the bat of 1B Trey Mancini. Bowie scored again on a single by C Rossmel Perez that plated the first baseman.

Berry's night was cut short when the Cats' put together a six-run, seven-hit third inning - sending 11 batters to the plate. New Britain's run parade was highlighted by a three-run home run courtesy of CF Noel Cuevas, his first of the season. Bowie's starter lasted 2 1/3 innings of work, allowing seven runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out four. He falls to 2-5 on the year.

The home club tacked on three more runs in the fourth, pulling ahead 10-2. C Tom Murphy slugged a solo shot just to the left of the video board, tying him with Story for club lead at ten. With runners on first and second, 1B Will Swanner cleared the bases on a double to the gap in right-center off of reliever RHP Gene Escat, scoring both Cuevas and DH Juan Ciriaco.

Bowie picked two runs in the top of the sixth, closing the gap to six. Mancini collected his second RBI of the night on his second extra base hit - this time a double to deep center.

New Britain drove the dagger home in the bottom of the sixth - scoring three more runs to go up by the score of 13-4. Cuevas scored his third run of the game, giving him 16 on the year.

Carle hurled a complete game to improve his record to 7-4. The right hander allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven. Snyder's single to lead off the second broke up Carle's streak of retiring 21 consecutive batters, dating back to his start on June 6th against Akron.

GAME TWO

The Baysox strung together three consecutive two-out hits in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead in Game Two. Rock Cats start RHP Shane

Broyles gave up back-to-back singles to CF Glynn Davis and SS Ozzie Martinez before LF Mike Yastrzemski lined an RBI double down the line in right.

New Britain picked up their first hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the fourth - a single to left by the newest Rock Cat RF Jeremy Barfield. Bowie starter RHP Dennis Torres rolled through four innings, giving up just the one hit while walking four and striking out none.

Bowie reliever RHP Mychal Givens came on in the bottom of the fifth and was almost immediately met with a sticky situation. LF Michael Tauchman legged out an infield single and with SS Trevor Story at the plate, the outfielder stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by C David Freitas. Givens proceeded to walk Story before recording back to back strikeouts to get out of the jam.

The Baysox reliever earned the win in relief (3-1) recording four strikeouts in two innings while allowing one hit and one walk.

Broyles allowed just the one run on four hits while walking none and striking out four over two and two-thirds innings, falling to 0-1 in the losing effort. The Rock Cats bullpen combined for four and one-third scoreless innings of relief.

LHP Ryan Carpenter starts for the Rock Cats on Thursday evening and will square off against Bowie starter RHP Parker Bridwell. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
