PITTSBURGH (June 17, 2015) - The Pittsburgh Riverhounds played valiantly Wednesday against Major League Soccer's D.C. United in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup before falling to a 3-1 loss after extra time.

Corner kicks proved to be the decisive factor in the Hounds defeat. United opened the scoring on eight minutes when Luis Silva's delivery was flicked on by Conor Doyle and finished by Facundo Coria at the back post.

Kofi Opare then scored the game winning goal two minutes into extra time off another set piece from Jared Jeffrey.

D.C. dealt the finishing blow on 104 minutes when Jairo Arrieta crossed to Nick DeLeon to head past Calle Brown.

Pittsburgh could have fallen behind on four minutes when Markus Halsti sent the ball against the post from Coria's corner kick.

The Hounds responded well in the first half after D.C.'s opener and reversed the pressure toward Andrew Dykstra's goal. That culminated in a penalty kick on 24 minutes after Opare misplayed Stephen Okai's long ball and proceeded to catch Kevin Kerr from behind.

Rob Vincent converted from the spot to level the score and continue his streak of scoring in every cup game this season.

Okai played Mike Green in on goal on 30 minutes as the Hounds threatened to take the lead. Dykstra quickly came off his line to make the save.

Danny Earls then crossed to an open Kerr as the interval approached. The Scotsman volleyed right into the hands of Dykstra.

Green's goal line clearance off a Jalen Robinson header in first half stoppage time prevented United from taking a lead into the dressing room.

The second half lacked the action of the first 45 minutes as neither team could find the breakthrough to win in regulation.

Vincent came closest for the Hounds on 59 minutes when Kerr found him in the middle and his blast forced Dykstra to jump and tip over his crossbar.

United strung together some late corners with Brown and company holding the fort to force extra time.

Pittsburgh was unfortunate not to equalize on a couple of occasions in extra time. Vincent dribbled through the D.C. defense on 94 minutes. His shot lacked the power to beat Dykstra.

Drew Russell then saw his header striking the post on 97 minutes from Earls' inswinging free kick.

The Hounds return to regular USL league action Saturday when F.C. Montreal visits Highmark Stadium for a first meeting between the two teams. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
