Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws came home from a 5-2 road trip and were greeted by the Delmarva Shorebirds, who swept Lakewood in a double-header, winning 9-6 and 4-0 on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood.

In the first game, the Shorebirds scored four times in the second inning and five times in the fourth inning to jump out to a 9-1 lead. The BlueClaws, however, made a run. They scored the next five runs, including one on the first home run of the season by Cord Sandberg, to cut the lead to 9-6.

With two outs in the seventh, Herlis Rodriguez pinch hit off Garrett Cortright and lined a 2-2 pitch to left field that hung up long enough for TJ Olesczuk to come in and make a sliding catch to end the game.

Brian Gonzalez (4-4) earned the win, allowing two runs in five innings, while Tyler Viza (4-2), who gave up eight runs, six earned, in 3.1 innings while walking a career high five, took the loss.

Cord Sandberg went 4-4 with two RBIs and his first home run of the year for the BlueClaws. Derek Peterson, a St. Rose High School graduate, went 3-4 with 4 RBIs and his first professional home run for Delmarva.

In the second game, the teams were scoreless through five, but in the top of the 6th inning, Riley Palmer singled off Joey DeNato to drive in Derek Peterson to put Delmarva up 1-0 and Elier Leyva followed with an RBI single to put the Shorebirds up 2-0. They added two more in the 7th inning against Alexis Rivero.

Austin Davis started game two for the BlueClaws and threw three scoreless innings.

Nick Cunningham threw five scoreless innings to improve to 2-3 while Mike Burke got the last six outs for his first save.

The series with Delmarva continues on Wednesday night at 7:05. RHP Ranfi Casimiro (2-4) starts for the BlueClaws against Delmarva RHP Matthew Grimes (4-4).
