Alabama Hammers News Release

NASHVILLE, TN (June 16, 2015) - The Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) is proud to announce the Week 13 Players of the Week.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week: WR Mico McSwain (Alabama)

It's been a rough second half of the 2015 season for the Hammers. After opening year defeating the defending champion Venom twice in three weeks, Alabama dropped six straight before playing spoiler by pulling off the 41-39 upset of Lehigh Valley. Former MVP Mico McSwain (6'3 215, North Alabama) hauled in a PIFL 2015 season high 14 receptions for 214 yards and two touchdowns with the ladder score serving as the game-winner. Having already surpassed the PIFL record for receiving yards in a season (1,328), McSwain is 13 receptions shy of tying the PIFL individual season record previously set back in 2012. Alabama closes out the year at home this Saturday against Columbus.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week: QB Garrett Sutphen (Alabama)

Teams only go as far as their gun slinger can take them. Despite being third in touchdowns and on pace to be the only quarterback to surpass 3,000 yards, QB Garret Sutphen (6'3 220 UNC Pembroke) has thrown a league-high 18 interceptions a part of the reason why the Hammers rank second to last in turnover margin (- 9). In a matchup that saw six lead changes, five of which came in the second half alone, Sutphen and company played spoiler passing for a league high 330 yards reaching the end-zone six times leading the Hammers on the game-winning drive when he connected with McSwain on a 34 yard pass in the game's final minute to pull off the 41-39 upset over Lehigh Valley.

Honorable Mention: WR Darrell Holmes (Nashville), QB Charles McCullum (Nashville)

Defensive Player of the Week: DB Roshawn Marshall (Columbus)

Off his pace from a season ago when he tied the single-season record for interceptions in a season, DB Roshawn Marshall (5'11 205, Central Missouri) is quietly leading the top seeded Lions with five picks. In Saturday's thrilling 43-40 victory over Trenton, as the Freedom were beginning to build momentum towards a comeback Marshall nabbed an interception in the back of the end-zone. Eventually leading to a TD, the turnover was crucial as the Freedom went on a three touchdown fourth quarter barrage. The Lions win secured home-field advantage while Trenton faces a win or go home situation this weekend at home versus Nashville.

Honorable Mention: DB Kenny Veal (Nashville), DB Keiron Jones (Trenton)

Down to the final week of the season and only one playoff seed has been locked up. With a triple-header on Saturday, Richmond can officially lock up the second seed by knocking off Erie. For the Venom to get home field for the first round, they will not only need to take care of the Freedom but also hope the Explosion can pull off the upset of Richmond. The Freedom face a win or go home matchup against the Venom, if they win they can officially book a trip to Richmond as the 3rd seed. Lose and fall victim to a tie-breaker scenario that will allow the idle Steelhawks to sneak into the playoffs as the 4th seed for the second consecutive year.
