LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws swept the weekly South Atlantic League Player & Pitcher of the Week Awards this week, with Malquin Canelo winning SAL Player of the Week and Josh Taylor winning SAL Pitcher of the Week.
Canelo, a 20 year old shorstop from San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic, was 9-22 with a double, triple, two home runs, and seven RBIs, and six runs scored in five games last week. On the year, he's hitting .313, eighth best in the league, and leads the league with 18 doubles. He will be the starting shortstop for the SAL Northern Division All-Stars in the SAL All-Star Game on June 23rd in Asheville.
Taylor, a 21 year old left-handed pitcher from Phoenix, Arizona, threw seven scoreless innings on four hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts at Lexington on Tuesday, earning a win in his lone start last week. Taylor was signed by the Phillies as a non-drafted free agent last year from Georgia College after he spent two seasons at Scottsdale Community College.
Herlis Rodriguez was SAL Player of the Week for the week ending May 17th. Last year, Dylan Cozens, in the week ending May 4th, was the lone BlueClaw to win SAL Player of the Week.
