Beach Bums Win 6th Straight

WUERFEL PARK The Traverse City Beach Bums completed a three-game weekend sweep, and a perfect five-game home stand, with a 5-1 win over the Joliet Slammers at Wuerfel Park Sunday evening. With the win, the Beach Bums have won six straight overall and 11 of their last 13 games.
As they've done for most of the last two weeks, strong pitching, reliable defense and a productive offense all added together in victory.
Jay Austin had four hits and was only a home run short of the cycle. It's the first four-hit night for a Beach Bums' hitter since Jake Rhodes July 6, 2014.
Jeff DeBlieux drove in two runs with a triple. Pitcher Kramer Champlin improved to 2-2 on the season shutting down the Joliet line-up over seven innings. He allowed only four hits and no runs.
The defense turned in a pair of double plays.
The Beach Bums struck in the bottom of the second inning. Jake Rhodes and Greg Harisis led off with singles, followed by DeBlieux's two-run triple to right center. It's the first extra base hit and RBIs for DeBlieux this season and they turned out to be the game winning runs.
DeBlieux would later score on a Sam Bumpers sacrifice fly and it was 3-0.
Joliet's only threat against Champlin came in the fifth inning when they put runners at second and third with two outs. Champlin would come through to induce an inning ending ground out. In the bottom of the fifth, the Beach Bums expanded on the lead.
Austin tripled and scored on Graham Ramos' RBI single. A Yazy Arbelo double off the right field wall plated Ramos and it was 5-0.
Joliet would get a run in the ninth put that was all in the Beach Bums' 5-1 victory.
Traverse City is off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday at the Normal Cornbelters. That game starts a nine-game road trip for the team, including three at Normal, Evansville and Southern Illinois each. The Beach Bums are back at Wuerfel Park Friday June 26-Sunday June 27.
All games are broadcast live on 98.1 The Bear.
The Wuerfel Park offices are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The Beach Bums will play 51 games at Wuerfel Park in 2015. In addition, there is a Farmers & Flea Market Saturdays June 13th-October 10th. Along with live concerts following most Saturday home games. Season ticket packages are still available!
