Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (36-26) and Tampa Yankees (30-32) went back and forth for 10 innings on Saturday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Tied 6-6 in the top of the 10th, Tampa rallied for a pair of runs and eventually hung on for an 8-6 win.

RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (L, 4-4) had retired each of the first five batters he faced entering the final frame, but a pair of singles from Miguel Andujar and Mike Ford chased him from the game. RHP Evan Mitchell came in and issued a walk to Dante Bichette to load the bases. Mark Payton then hit a shallow fly to center that CF Junior Arias dropped. He threw back in to force out Bichette at second base, but the Yankees took a 7-6 lead as Andujar scored from third. Ford moved to third on the play, and scored a few pitches later when Payton took off for second and C Joe Hudson's throw deflected into center field. 3B Taylor Sparks drew a two-out walk in the bottom half, but Alex Smith (S, 1) struck out 1B Robert Ramirez to finish off Daytona.

The Tortugas entered Saturday's game with a 25-3 record when leading after seven innings, but could not hold a 6-4 lead in the eighth. Tyler Wade and Andujar hit consecutive singles to start the frame, and Bichette drew a walk to load the bases. LHP Nolan Becker (BS, 2) then allowed a two-run, game-tying single to Payton, who lined one between second and third. Muhammad came on to record the final two outs of the inning, but a wild pitch allowed Bichette to score from third, giving Tampa its first lead of the night, 6-5.

RHP Alejandro Chacin (H, 4) was perfect through his first 1.2 innings, but allowed a solo home run to Ericson Leonora in the seventh which brought the Yankees within 5-4. RF Sebastian Elizalde re-extended the lead to 6-4 in the bottom half with a solo homer to dead center off All-Star reliever Andury Acevedo (BS, 2)(W, 1-0), who had allowed just two earned runs all season prior to that at bat.

The Tortugas had a 4-2 lead after six innings, thanks to a solo home run from Arias in the first inning, and a three-run rally in the third. 2B Wendell Soto, SS Carlton Daal and LF Phillip Ervin started the inning with singles against All-Star Jonathan Holder. Ervin drove in Soto, Daal scored on an RBI groundout from DH Alex Blandino, and Ervin came home on a ringing liner to center from Elizalde. Elizalde now leads the FSL with 44 RBI.

All-Star RHP Barrett Astin allowed one earned run on four hits in five strong innings. He issued just one walk and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts. His 2.19 ERA currently ranks ninth in the Florida State League.

The Tortugas will wrap up their week-long homestand with a 5:35 p.m. game against the Tampa Yankees on Sunday. RHP Jackson Stephens (4-3, 3.67 ERA) will take the mound for the Tortugas, who have a five-game lead over the second-place Clearwater Threshers with eight games remaining in the first half.

Fans can listen to the action on the Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB. As with every Sunday home game, the Tortugas radio team will be broadcasting from the stands at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
