Wilmington Collapses, Loses in Extras

Wilmington Sharks News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, NC - The Wilmington Sharks (7-6) fell victim to a walk-off single in the bottom of the thirteenth inning on Friday, handing the Morehead City Marlins (6-6) a 13-12 win at Big Rock Stadium. With the score tied at 12 in the thirteenth, Chris Campbell came to the plate and singled, plating Dominick Cammarata.

After jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the fifth, the Sharks folded, notching just two hits in the final five innings to allow Morehead City to fight their way back in. Although they let the game slip away from them, there are many positives to take away from Friday night's long, ugly, unorthodox baseball game in Morehead City.

Steven Linkous, Sam Foy, and Jae Roberts accounted for ten of fifteen Sharks hits, as well as eight of ten RBIs for the team, including a behemoth of a two-run homerun by Roberts. Sam Foy followed up Thursday night's pinch hit single to drive in the eventual game winning run with a four-hit evening in Morehead City.

Linkous finished the evening 3-5 with 3 RBIs before leaving the game due to an injury in the ninth. He showed bunt on the first pitch of the inning and took a fastball off his right hand, sending him to the ground clutching his hand. After a brief visit from the medical staff, Linkous was given a bag of ice and took the rest of the night off. The swelling is minimal and the injury is not severe.

Sharks starter John Parke cruised through the first two innings, facing six Marlins and recording three strikeouts. He ran into some trouble in the third when he allowed a leadoff single and a two-run homerun, but recovered quickly by sitting down three of the next four batters. Parke was removed in the sixth after allowing four hits in the inning - a leadoff homerun and two doubles.

Campbell, Logan Sherer, and Stephen Wallace helped lead the Morehead City Marlins to a comeback, combining for 13 hits and seven RBIs. As a team, the Marlins knocked 18 hits and were helped out by four Sharks errors - two of which came in the eighth as Wilmington was looking to put the game away.

The Sharks had a chance in the eleventh inning. The score was knotted up at 12, and Nick Rotola singled out into right to extend his hitting streak to six games. Zach Reid would try to pick off the speedy Rotola, but his attempt would sail high, allowing Rotola to fly around to third. Reid coaxed a groundball out of Joe Bialkowski to squelch the opportunity.

The Wilmington Sharks will play their sixth consecutive road game Saturday as they face off with the Red Wolves in Florence, South Carolina before returning home on Tuesday June 16th to play the Wilson Tobs.
