Americans Slip Past Stingrays 3-2 in Overtime in Game 5 of the Kelly Cup Finals

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (14-11) earned a late game-tying goal in the third period from forward Wayne Simpson, but the Allen Americans (15-8) succeeded 3-2 in overtime of Game 5 of the Kelly Cup Finals at the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday night. The Stingrays trail best-of-seven series 3-2.
The Stingrays broke open the scoring 8:17 into the contest as forward Patrick Gaul caught a misplayed puck from Americans netminder Riley Gill (W, 23 saves on 25 shots) and banked it off the back of the leg pad and across the goal line. Simpson and defenseman Lee Moffie earned assists.
Americans team captain Jamie Schaafsma evened the score at 9:09 of the second period beating Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (L, 29 saves on 32 shots) off the blocker hand from the right-wing circle. Forward Chris Crane and defenseman Kevin Young picked up assists.
With the clock winding down in the third period, Simpson buried the game-tying marker at 16:05, knocking in rebound off the pads of Gill following a shot from the point from defenseman Drew MacKenzie. Forward Derek DeBlois picked the secondary assist.
For the second straight game, the two sides needed overtime and the Americans prevailed as forward Greger Hanson broke free of the defense along the left-wing board and beat Jakaitis past the blocker at 5:25. The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while the Americans went 0-for-1.
The Stingrays host the Americans for Game 6 of the Kelly Cup Finals tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10 at 7:05. If necessary, Game 7 is Sunday, June 14 at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas at 5:05 p.m. Tickets for Game 6 are ON SALE NOW! Buy Tickets
