Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

LANCASTER, CA) - Rancho Cucamonga suffered its worst loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 17-2 in the series finale against Lancaster at The Hangar.

Lancaster (30-26) took advantage of a defensive miscue to get on the board in the first inning against Dodgers' rehabber Brandon League (0-1). Brett Phillips reached on an error by second baseman Brandon Trinkwon. After advancing to second on a groundout, Phillips scored on A.J. Reed's single to left, giving the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.

League, who is recovering from a right shoulder injury, allowed one unearned run and one hit. The 32-year-old went 2-3 with a 2.57 ERA in 63 appearances last season with the Dodgers and is an 11-year Major League veteran.

The JetHawks expanded their lead in the second inning against originally-scheduled starter Jeff Brigham. James Ramsay led off the inning with a single. Ronnie Mitchell walked and Brian Holborton grounded into a fielder's choice, resulting in runners at the corners. Marc Wik's safety squeeze brought Ramsay home. Phillips singled to center, plating Holborton for a 3-0 advantage.

Rancho Cucamonga (33-23) trimmed the deficit in the third inning against Lancaster starter Edison Frias (7-2). Dillon Moyer drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Trinkwon's groundout to second base chased Moyer home to make it a 3-1 contest.

Lancaster answered in the bottom of the fourth. Ramsay opened the inning with a single before stealing second base. Mitchell walked and Holborton singled to load the bases. Brigham issued back-to-back walks to Phillips and Derek Fisher to force in runs, giving the home team a 5-1 edge.

The JetHawks poured it on in the fifth against reliever Victor Araujo. Mayfield singled and stole second, setting the table for Holborton's RBI double. After a wild pitch moved Holborton to third, Wik walked. Phillips reached on an infield single, scoring Holborton. Fisher walked to load the bases and Davis was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Reed singled to right field, scoring Phillips. While taking his sign on the rubber, Araujo dropped the baseball, resulting in a balk to bring Fisher home. Mayfield capped the seven-run frame with his second hit of the inning, a single that plated two runs to give Lancaster a 12-1 cushion.

For a second straight day, the Quakes struggled offensively. After mustering just one run and two hits in Saturday's loss, Frias limited Rancho Cucamonga to one run and three hits over six and one-third innings. With the victory, Frias is now leading the California League with seven wins.

The JetHawks tacked on another run in the sixth against reliever Luis Meza. Mitchell and Holborton singled, while Wik walked to load the bases. Fisher's base-hit to right scored Mitchell to make it 13-1.

Lancaster added an exclamation point in the seventh. Mayfield singled before Ramsay and Mitchell walked to load the bases. Holborton's sacrifice fly chased Mayfield home. Phillips launched a three-run homer over the right field fence, extending the JetHawks' lead to 17-1.

The Quakes tallied a run in the eighth against reliever Frederick Tiburcio. Delvis Morales reached on an infield single and Kyle Farmer was hit by a pitch, placing runners at first and second. Morales raced home on Joey Curletta's single to left, bringing the final score to 17-2.

The 17 runs allowed were a season-high by Quakes' pitching. The pitching staff allowed 16 hits and combined to issue nine walks in the contest, which resulted in a split in the four-game series.

Due to High Desert's extra-inning loss to San Jose on Sunday, Lancaster leapfrogged the Mavericks into second place in the South Division. Rancho Cucamonga still leads the division by three games over the JetHawks.

The Quakes continue their seven-game road trip on Monday night, heading north to Modesto for the opener of a three-game series. Rancho Cucamonga will send right-hander Zack Bird (2-2, 5.13 ERA) to the mound, while the Nuts counter with righty Antonio Senzatela (4-3, 2.32 ERA). First pitch at John Thurman Field is scheduled for 7:05 pm. You can catch all the action on FOX Sports 1350, beginning with the LoanMart Pregame Report at 6:50.

The Quakes will return to LoanMart Field on Thursday, June 11th to begin a four-game series against the Stockton Ports. It will be a Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, featuring 24-ounce Pepsi products for $2, 16-ounce domestic drafts for $3, along with 16-ounce premium drafts, wine, champagne and margaritas costing just $4!
