Rock Cats Battle, Fall at Home to Akron 2-1

New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats were defeated by the Akron RubberDucks by the score of 2-1 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening.

The Rock Cats jumped out to a 1-0 lead after two innings of play. Back-to-back doubles from LF Tyler Massey and DH Will Swanner off of RubberDucks' starter RHP Will Roberts gave the home club the early advantage.

Akron tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth after 2B Todd Hankins drew a bases-loaded walk from Rock Cats starter RHP Matt Flemer. Three singles filled the sacks for the Indians' affiliate and Hankins worked a nine pitch at-bat before earning the free pass and pulling even with the Cats'.

LF Bryson Myles gave Akron their winning run on a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth, his second of 2015. The longball sailed high over the wall in left-center and that would be the deciding factor in this series opener.

Flemer went six innings and figured in his first game after recording eight straight no-decisions. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three. He falls to 1-2.

Roberts earns the victory, improving to 4-2, after allowing just the one run on four hits while walking none and striking out five. RHP Josh Martin earned his second save of the year.

Rock Cats LHP Ryan Carpenter gets the starting call for Saturday evening's contest, slated for a 6:35 p.m. starter. Akron will throw out LHP Shawn Morimando.
