Bulldogs Name Steve Staios New President

HAMILTON, ONT. - Hamilton Bulldogs majority owner Michael Andlauer announced today that former National Hockey League defenceman and Toronto Maple Leafs manager of player development Steve Staios has been named president of the Ontario Hockey League's Bulldogs.

"I'm proud to announce Steve Staios as the Hamilton Bulldogs' new president," Andlauer said. "As a native of Hamilton and former player in the OHL, Steve has a strong understanding of the important role an OHL team and its players have in the community. Steve has developed his management skills since retiring from the NHL and the leadership he demonstrated throughout his playing career makes him the perfect individual to lead our organization into its first season in the OHL."

Staios, a 41-year-old Hamilton native, joins the Bulldogs after spending the past three years with the Maple Leafs, where he most recently served as manager of player development. In addition to this role, Staios was a player development advisor and served as an assistant coach for part of the 2014-15 season with the Maple Leafs.

"We are truly thankful to Steve Staios for the valuable role he has played within the Leafs organization," said Maple Leafs assistant general manager Kyle Dubas. "We are also excited for Steve as the Bulldogs set roots in his native Hamilton - he will serve that club and community incredibly well."

Staios spent 18 seasons in the NHL as a defenceman, playing in 1,001 regular season games from 1995 to 2012 with the Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, Atlanta Thrashers, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders. He amassed 220 points (56 goals, 164 assists) in the regular season and six points (one goal, five assists) in 33 post-season games. Prior to beginning his NHL career, Staios competed in the OHL with the Niagara Falls Thunder (1990-92) and the Sudbury Wolves (1992-93). For his first two seasons in Niagara Falls, Staios was coached by current Bulldogs head coach and general manager George Burnett.

"I'm thrilled and honoured to join the Hamilton Bulldogs organization as team president," said Staios. "I want to thank Michael Andlauer for this tremendous opportunity to return to my hometown. I grew up playing in the grassroots minor hockey programs in Hamilton before I began my OHL career with Niagara Falls and George Burnett. The City of Hamilton has a rich hockey history and I'm excited to grow the OHL's brand of Bulldogs hockey in this great community."

Staios has experience on the international stage as well, having served as director of player development with Team Canada at the 2014 World Championship. As a player, he won gold medals at the 2003 and 2004 World Championships and a silver medal at the 2008 World Championship, all with Team Canada.
