Dynamo Ties New York City FC 1-1
May 30, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release
Will Bruin scored his fourth goal in as many games and Tyler Deric made six saves, but David Villa converted a penalty kick late in the first half as the Houston Dynamo and New York City FC played to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.
Houston will return home to host the New York Red Bulls at 8 p.m. CT on Friday, June 5 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Bruin's goal arrived from a corner kick in the 16th minute. Alexander Lopez delivered the set piece and David Horst rose above his mark to head the cross to the feet of Bruin, who used one touch for a clinical finish from five yards, using his right instep to drive his shot into the upper corner, leaving no chance for goalkeeper Josh Saunders.
It was Bruin's fifth goal of the season, with all five in his last seven games.
New York City FC was awarded a penalty kick in the 45th minute as Jeb Brovsky served a cross from the right flank and Adam Nemec rose to slightly flick a header toward goal. Referee Sorin Stoica judged that the ball struck the arm of Dynamo defender Raul Rodriguez and awarded NYCFC the spot kick.
On the penalty, Deric guessed correctly, diving to his left, but Villa's shot was precise and found the back corner of the net for his third goal of the season and the equalizing tally.
Houston had chances to regain the lead in the second half, including a Bruin header from a Boniek Garcia cross that was saved by Saunders in the 56th minute.
In the 83rd, Lopez, Ricardo Clark and Bruin combined beautifully down the left channel to set up Giles Barnes, who broke behind the defense and had a chance from 10 yards but his tight-angled shot was smothered by Saunders.
New York City had the two final chances of the game, beginning with a long run from substitute Kwadwo Poku that ended with a diving header from Brovsky and an outstanding save from Deric, who dove far to his left to parry Brovsky's shot off the line and off the front part of the post. Later, Brovsky found space at the back post and missed wide with a volley from eight yards.
