Dean Pitches Wings to DH Split

Rochester Red Wings News Release

BUFFALO, NY - Rochester received a strong start in game one and some misfortune in game two as the Red Wings and Buffalo Bisons split a doubleheader Friday night at Coca-Cola Field.

Game 1

The first game featured a strong outing from starter Pat Dean (5-3) who continued to show why he's been one of the better pitchers in the league this season. The lefty scattered six hits and two walks over 6.1 innings while surrendering a solo home run in the second, the only run he would allow, while collecting his team-leading fifth victory.

Ryan Wheeler hit his first home run as a Red Wing in support of Dean in the second inning against Miguel Castro (0-2). Castro would leave after 1.1 innings due to an apparent hand injury.

Dean had retired eight men in a row until he issued a walk to Jonathan Diaz with one out in the seventh inning. That promoted a pitching change to closer A.J. Achter. Achter got a ground ball for a force out and after things got interesting following a passed ball, the Michigan State product struck out Dalton Pompey to end the game while securing his seventh save in a 2-1 Rochester victory.

Game 2

One tough inning was all it took for Tyler Duffey (0-2) and the Wings to drop game two to the Bisons (24-25). After the Red Wings (27-22) took a 2-0 lead on Danny Ortiz's two-run single in the third, Buffalo responded by plating four of their own in the bottom half.

Three straight singles started the inning but no runs had scored at that point. A tailor made double play to short was booted and allowed the first run to score, Dioner Navarro, on rehab from the Blue Jays, blooped an RBI single and Matt Hague ripped a two-run single to left-center to give Buffalo a 4-2 lead.

Rochester tried to mount a comeback in the seventh down two runs as Wilkin Ramirez singled to center off his fists and Josmil Pinto hit a pinch-hit double hard off the left field wall which advanced Ramirez to third. A ground out and a fly out ended the game and the comeback effort.
