New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ "" The Jackals took care of business in their home opener with a resounding 3-1 victory over the Rockland Boulders, ending a four-game losing streak to open the season.

A 2-run homer by third baseman Mark Threlkeld paced Jersey, a jolt the Jackals needed after struggling to find some offense in Trois Rivieres. The homer came on a 3-0 pitch from Rockland pitcher Mike Dennhardt who left a fast ball over the heart of the plate.

Jackals starter Gabriel Perez made the lead standup with six outstanding innings. Perez, who won eight games as a Jackal last season, brought a swagger to the mound and his passion could be felt through the entire Jackals team on Friday night. The Dominican Republic native struck out eight, including three strike outs of Joe Maloney, who had been hitting .600 coming into Friday's match-up.

The Jackals added some insurance for Perez when Leandro Castro drove in his first Jackals run on a sharp single up the middle to drive in Jamal Austin to make it 3-1.

However the biggest moment of the night came in the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded for the Boulders. Reliever Hector Nelo came in and blew away Maloney on 1-2 heater to get out of the inning to preserve the lead. For Nelo it was his first save of the season for the Jackals.

New Jersey (1-4) returns to Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday night for the second game of this four game series. Saturday will be fireworks night at the ballpark.
