Loons Cruise in Bowling Green Fifteen-Hit Barrage Aids Winning Effort

Great Lakes Loons News Release

Bowling Green, Kentucky - Bolstered by a five-run frame against one of the Midwest League's top arms, the Loons raced to a 6-0 lead and did not look back en route to a 9-2 victory over the Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark on Friday night.

The Loons (23-25) cranked out 15 hits and played error-free baseball to extend their winning streak to three games and move to 3-3 on their nine-game road trip. Bowling Green (27-22) has lost two straight and falls two games behind Lansing for the lead in the Midwest League East.

The win is made more impressive given the opposing starting pitcher. Right-hander Brent Honeywell, the Tampa Bay Rays second-round draft choice in 2014, made his second start against the Loons after a masterful outing at Dow Diamond on April 28 in which he allowed one hit over six innings with seven strikeouts as part of a 1-0 Hot Rods win.

On Friday, the Loons cracked Honeywell's code and relied on some assistance from the Bowling Green defense along the way. In the third inning, Bowling Green catcher Mac James threw to second base to double-off Jimmy Allen, who instead raced for third in a delayed steal. Second baseman Riley Unroe threw wide down to the third and the ball carried to the railing of the Bowling Green dugout. Allen scored standing on the play to give the Loons a 1-0 edge.

Great Lakes broke the game open against Honeywell one inning later. Alex Santana singled to third and moved to second two batters later on Jacob Scavuzzo's base knock. A blooper from lefty Brant Whiting loaded the bases with one out for Kelvin Ramos, the hero of the Loons' 2-1 win over Fort Wayne the previous night.

Ramos again supplied a timely hit, this time a two-RBI single to center. As Santana and Scavuzzo scored, center fielder Thomas Milone misplayed the ball, which allowed Whiting to score. Ramos advanced to third on the error.

The Loons scored twice more in the fourth and batted around to build a 6-0 lead. All five runs in the inning were earned. It is the second time this season the Loons have scored five runs in a single inning (May 2 versus Dayton in the third).

Bowling Green entered the night with the third-highest batting average in the Midwest League, but no one told right-hander Joe Broussard, who made his first professional start on Friday. Pitching in front of family, who made the trip from his home state of Louisiana, Broussard (3-2) issued a statement with five innings of two-hit baseball in which he allowed one run and no walks alongside seven strikeouts. The K-count set a new career high for Broussard, who previously fanned six batters in Rookie-League Ogden on August 18, 2014.

Honeywell (4-3) suffered the loss and pitched five innings with six runs (five earned) allowed on ten hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Loons will face a motivated Bowling Green side in game two of the four-game series on Saturday, as the Hot Rods will try and end a three-game slide. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EDT on ESPN100.9-FM.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
