Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons were unable to overcome a one-run deficit in the late innings of a 3-2 contest Friday night at Regions Field, dropping their second of three played in a five-game series with Jacksonville.

Suns starter Austin Brice (2-4, 7.71 ERA) picked up the win with a six-inning, four-hit performance. Reliever Matt Tomshaw tossed the final three innings, allowing no hits, to seal the win and earn the save.

Tyler Barnette (2-2, 1.27 ERA) got the start for Birmingham but exited after two no-hit innings. Tony Bucciferro entered in relief and was charged with the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the year.

The Suns and Barons were tied 1-1 after three innings. Both teams plated a run in the third as Jacksonville scored on a double play, and Joey DeMichele singled home a run for Birmingham. Christian Marrero put the Barons ahead with a solo home run to lead off the fourth, but the advantage was short-lived.

Jacksonville scored two off Bucciferro in the sixth on three hits. Former LSU standout Austin Nola lined a double to right to score the inning's first run, and first baseman Viosergy Rosa followed up with a single to right to score Nola.

Blake Smith and Kyle Hansen combined to throw the final three innings, giving up just two hits among themselves, but a 1-2-3 ninth stifled any scoring chances for the Barons. The loss puts the Suns ahead 2-1 in the series and 5-3 in the season series.

The two teams return to action Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. start. White Sox No. 3 prospect Frankie Montas (0-1, 3.60 ERA) gets the start for Birmingham and right-hander Trevor Williams (1-6, 5.40 ERA) takes the bump for Jacksonville.

Tomorrow's game lands on a YP Saturday, and AllSouth Appliance will give away a grill to one lucky fan. The ZOOperstars! will also be in attendance, bring along their cast of mischievous mascots.
