Legends Win 10-3; Escalera Goes 5-For-5

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Alfredo Escalera had five hits in five at bats, including his seventh home run of the season, and the Lexington Legends pounded out a season-high 19 hits in a 10-3 win over the Greenville Drive Friday night.

Wander Franco homered and drove in three runs for Lexington, and Elier Hernandez was three-for-five, including a double and a triple.

Right-hander Kyle Zimmer, one of the top pitching prospects for the Kansas City Royals, entered the game in the sixth inning for his first appearance in 2015. He was added to the Lexington roster Friday afternoon. He worked an inning and two-thirds and allowed one hit and no runs.

The Legends scored a run in the bottom of the second inning after loading the bases on singles by Hernandez, Franco and Chase Vallot. Corey Toups grounded into a force play as Hernandez scored.

The Drive tied the game on an unearned run in the top of the third. Franco's throwing error from third base allowed Joseph Monge to reach second. Monge moved to third on Mauricio Dubon's ground out and then scored on a single by Derek Miller.

Escalera broke the tie with a homer to left field in the bottom of the third, and the Legends went on to score three more runs in the inning. Hernandez doubled down the left field line, and Franco followed with his fifth home run of the season. Singles by Vallot, Samir Duenez, and Toups produced the fourth run of the inning, and put the Legends up 5-1.

Greenville cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth. Monge and Dubon started off the inning with singles to center field. Both advanced on a passed ball by Vallot, and both scored on a two-out single to left field by former Northern Kentucky University star Jordan Procyshen.

The Legends countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Duenez drew a leadoff walk, and with one out, came around to score on a single by Michael Hill and an error by Monge, the center fielder. Humberto Arteaga's single scored Hill to give the Legends a 7-3 lead.

The Legends extended the lead with three runs in the eighth inning. Escalera singled to start the inning, stole second base, moved to third on Ryan O'Hearn's ground out and scored on a triple by Hernandez. Hernandez. Back-to-back doubles by Franco and Duenez produced two more runs.

Zach Lovvorn (4-4) got the win for the Legends. He went five innings, and allowed seven hits, three runs, two earned. He struck out four batters and walked none.

Jake Newberry got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout in the seventh inning, and went on to finish the game for his second save. Greenville starter Dedgar Jimenez (3-2) took the loss.

The Legends and Drive have split the first two games of the four-game series. Game three will be played Saturday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
