Crushers fall after allowing late inning runs to the Greys

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers dropped the first game of the weekend series to the Frontier Greys, 5-3, on Friday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The loss for the Crushers (5-8) was their third loss in four days, while the win for the Greys (5-8) moves them into a tie for fifth in the East Division.

Another good pitching battle took place through the first six innings. Rob Blanc was strong on the hill for the Crushers as he started and went five strong innings, striking out eight. Zac Treece then came on to get through the sixth inning.

The Crushers were able to get on the board first in the fourth inning. Ty Nelson scored from third when Juan Sanchez reached on an error by Greys first baseman Scott Carcaise.

Then, in the seventh inning, the Greys took a lead that would stick. Zach Tanner led off with a double off Treece. Kolby Moore (1-1) then entered for the entered the game and allowed a two-run home run to Carcaise, the first batter Moore faced.

In the eighth inning, the Greys tacked on three more runs. Francisco Rosario started the inning with a single, then Julio Rodriguez singled and Jhiromar Veras was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Carcaise. The Greys first baseman came up big with a three-run double with two outs.

The Crushers added two more in the ninth as Juan Sanchez singled and scored on a Frank Desico double. Desico then scored on a ground rule double to left off the bat of Anderson Hidalgo. However, the rally stopped there, as the Greys closer, Nick Anderson, struck out Jose Barraza, and closed the door on the Crushers rally.

Five pitchers were on the mound for the Crushers tonight, combining for 14 strikeouts. The bullpen allowed all five runs.

The Greys starter, Justin D'Alessandro (1-2), went seven innings, giving up 1 run that was not earned and struck out five while picking up the win. Brett Shankin threw a scoreless inning. Anderson surrendered two runs.

The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Frontier Greys at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Right-hander Hunter Adkins (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Crushers, while the Greys will throw right-hander Jordan Kraus (1-0, 0.75). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
