Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Right-handed starter Cody Martin and a pair of relievers combined on a three-hit shutout of the Columbus Clippers (26-23) Friday, as the Gwinnett Braves (23-26) opened their three-game series with a 4-0 victory at Coolray Field.

Martin (W, 1-1) gave up a two-out single to Jesus Aguilar in the fourth inning, but did not allow any other batter to reach base in his 5.0 innings of work. He also struck out six batters on 61 pitches (38 strikes) in his first home start with the G-Braves since the Atlanta Braves optioned him to Triple-A on May 19.

Right-hander Ryan Weber (H, 1) took over in the sixth and struck out the first two batters he faced. The only hitter he allowed to reach base was James Ramsey, who led off the seventh with a double.

It was Weber's second appearance for Gwinnett this season. He was promoted from Double-A Mississippi on Wednesday after making a spot start for the G-Braves on May 17. He worked 5.0 scoreless innings in that outing and has yet to allow a run in 7.2 innings with the G-Braves.

Right-hander Ryan Kelly (S, 1) struck out two Clippers and retired the final four batters of the night for the G-Braves, who now have four shutouts on the season and have not allowed more than two runs in each of their last 16 victories.

Gwinnett built an early lead on the Clippers and right-handed starter Jhoulys Chacin (L, 1-2), who shut out the G-Braves over 8.0 innings in his last start on May 24 at Columbus. Center fielder Jose Peraza laced a one-out double off the left-field wall in the first inning and scored on a single to center by Cedric Hunter for a 1-0 lead.

The G-Braves added a run in the second inning when Sean Kazmar hit a leadoff single and scored on a ground ball back to the mound from Barrett Kleinknecht. Chacin chose to throw to second base to retire Daniel Castro, which allowed Kazmar to cross home plate and put Gwinnett in front 2-0.

A two-out rally in the fifth inning produced Gwinnett's third tally against Chacin. Adonis Garcia scored the run when Castro hit the G-Braves' third consecutive single of the frame, a liner to center field.

The 3-0 lead became 4-0 in the eighth as Columbus right-handed reliever Dustin Molleken walked Eury Perez with the bases loaded to bring across Kleinknecht. Molleken entered the game for Chacin with two outs in the eighth and worked a third of an inning with a walk and a strikeout.

All four runs were charged to Chacin, who went 7.2 innings with 10 hits allowed, two walks, seven strikeouts and two wild pitches.

Kazmar finished the night 3-for-3 with a double, walk and run scored, while Peraza went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Joe Benson also had a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4.

The three hitters atop Columbus' lineup had the Clippers' only hits on the night. Francisco Lindor and Ramsey each went 1-for-4, and Aguilar ended the night 1-for-3.

Gwinnett and Columbus will play the middle game of their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Coolray Field. Right-hander Matt Wisler (2-3, 4.21 ERA) will make his 10th start of the season for Gwinnett. Left-hander T.J. House (0-1, 2.70 ERA) will get the call for the Clippers. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The G-Braves will wear Spider-Man jerseys as part of "Superhero Night." All game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off during the game, with bids accepted until 9 p.m. The auction is presented by Gwinnett Medical Center. To purchase tickets, call the Coolray Field Ticket Office at 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
