Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

GREENSBORO, NC - Trailing 4-3 in the ninth inning, the BlueClaws put the tying run at second base and the go-ahead run at first base, but couldn't bring them in, and Greensboro held on to top the BlueClaws 4-3 on Friday night at NewBridge Bank Park.

Josh Hodges struck out Cord Sandberg to end the game, earning his fifth save, and leveling the series at one game apiece. The BlueClaws had two on with nobody out but Grenny Cumana bunted into a 1-5 fielder's choice and Malquin Canelo popped out to first.

Michael Mader (3-5) earned the win, throwing seven scoreless innings for Greensboro, the longest outing of his career. Lakewood's Elniery Garcia (2-5) matched his career long with seven innings but took the loss.

Greensboro jumped to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the 3rd inning, one scoring on a passed ball and another on a John Norwood RBI single. The Hoppers would add a run in the 5th inning on a wild pitch that put them up 3-0. Elniery Garcia surrendered a 4th run in the 7th inning with Justin Twine scoring on a wild pitch, meaning only one of the the four runs he allowed came in on a ball hit in play by Greensboro.

Garcia finished seven innings for the second time this year, allowing four runs, but only two were earned. He also tied a season high with six strikeouts.

The BlueClaws got back in the game with three runs in the 8th inning off Luis Castillo. An RBI single by Rhys Hoskins and another by Deivi Grullon made it 4-2 and then after Castillo came out, Josh Hodges threw a wild pitch which allowed Hoskins to score and cut the lead to 4-3.

Jason Zgardowski threw a scoreless eighth for the BlueClaws.

The series in Greensboro continues on Saturday night. RHP Ricardo Pinto (4-1) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Drew Steckenrider (1-1).
