Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas "" The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their third-straight game and second consecutive against Freedom Division leading Southern Maryland, 4-1, on Thursday evening at Constellation Field in front of 4,038 fans. The loss drops the Skeeters to 13-20 while Southern Maryland improves to 21-12.
Southern Maryland struck for four unearned runs in the top of the second. Daryle Ward opened the inning with a single down the left field line. Following a groundout and a flyout, Sugar Land's starter, Derek Blacksher, appeared to work his way out of trouble with a groundball to third. Patrick Palmeiro was unable to cleanly field a grounder from Casey Frawley, putting runners on first and second. Antone DeJesus sprayed a ball just past the outstretched glove of first baseman Delwyn Young, bringing in Ward and moving Frawley up to third. Renny Osuna deposited Blacksher's full-count offering into shallow left center for the second run. Zach Wilson singled into left to drive in a pair and stake Southern Maryland a 4-0 lead early in the game.
Andrew Carpenter came in to relieve Blacksher with two outs in the top of the third. The former Major Leaguer went 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one intentional walk while striking out four. Carpenter, Cory VanAllen, Derrick Loop and Robbie Weinhardt combined to scatter three hits over the final seven innings.
Sugar Land put a runner on base in each of the final six innings, but was unable to string back-to-back hits together as it stranded six runners on base in the losing effort. Beamer Weems launched a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, extending his on-base streak to 23 straight games after the long ball narrowed the deficit to three, 4-1.
