ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Chicago Bandits have announced today that Christina Ambrose, a junior at Wheeling High School, and Vanessa Villasenor, a junior at Marist High School have been named the weekly winners of the TransNational Scholar Athlete of the Week. Both are now eligible to win the $1,000 scholarship that will be presented in June.

Ambrose was chosen for her contributions on the field and in her community.

When she's not tearing it up on the field, she is helping out with Operation Snowball, an alcohol and drug use prevention program that helps to empower students to make responsible choices and lead a drug-free life.

Ambrose also excels in the classroom taking several top level classes including: AP Physics, AP History, and AP English and Composition.

"Christina is an outstanding athlete," Head Coach Michael Caringella. "She's a hard worker, who loves the game."

"She will do anything asked of her to help the team."

The week of her selection, Ambrose posted a .333 batting average with seven runs scored including seven hits and four RBIs.

Villasenor was selected not only for her stellar performance on the field, but for her contributions off the field as well.

She recently brought gifts to pediatric patients being treated at Hope Children's Hospital. She also tutors her fellow Redhawk teammates as well as Marist students in her free time.

When she's not on the field, she is busy taking AP Chemistry, AP English and Composition, AP Spanish and Culture, Honors Physics, and College Algebra and Trigonometry Honors.

"Vanessa's work ethic is phenomenal in both athletics and academics," said Marist head varsity coach Colleen Biebel. "She is extremely driven and goal orientated. Her leadership on and off the field is something her teammates look up to."

"Vanessa is somebody who always wants to help. She supports her teammates, and does anything she can to help the team."

At the time of her selection, Vanessa held a .390 batting average with 39 hits including 32 RBIs with an on-base percentage of. 483 and 25 runs scored.

Parents, coaches, administrators and even fellow students are able to nominate a softball player from their school for the award. Submissions must be turned in each Friday by 5 p.m. in order to be considered for the award. Each week, the nominations will be voted upon by Bandits and TransNational staff members, with one winner being selected.

Nominations of student athletes will consist of both accomplishments on the diamond, in the classroom and in the community.

Weekly award winners will be featured on the Bandits social media and home page of the Bandits website. All weekly award winners will be eligible for the scholarship with the winner being named on Friday, June 5. The scholarship recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the Bandits vs. Akron Racers game on Saturday, June 6.

The Scholar Athlete of the Week program will run during the course of the 2015 high school season and will provide an opportunity for a student to win a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of TransNational.
