Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (May 28, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners announce that right-handed starting pitcher Adam Lopez has been picked up by the Seattle Mariners organization. He becomes the 41st former Miner to be signed to a Major League Baseball organization, and the third in 2015 after Cory Harrilchak (Miami) and Jarrett Miller (Baltimore).
Lopez was signed by the Miners after being let go by the Chicago White Sox organization in the offseason. The 6'5" Fredericksburg, Virginia native with electric stuff put up three dominant starts for Southern Illinois, going a perfect 3-0 with an astounding 0.41 ERA, giving up just one earned run in 22 innings on 11 total hits with four walks and 18 strikeouts. Of the 11 hits he surrendered, only one was for extra bases. Lopez also becomes the first former Miner to be signed by the Mariners organization.
"Our staff and players could not be happier for Adam," Miners manager Mike Pinto said. "Not only has he been lights-out since joining the Miners, he has been the perfect fit in our organization on and off the field. We will miss him and at the same time wish him the very best with the Mariners. He has a great opportunity with them and there are big things ahead of him. Our organization is committed to helping players get the chance to pursue that dream and believe that dreams do come true in Southern Illinois."
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
