Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

The Gary South Shore RailCats late rally fell one run short Wednesday night in a 3-2 loss to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. The RailCats entered the ninth inning trailing 3-0, when Drew Martinez singled off of Lincoln closer Sean Arneson. JD Pulfer followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Adam Taylor then hit into a fielders choice to force out Pulfer at second and put runners at the corners. Roger Bernal then hit a high fast ball to shallow center to score Martinez and put runners at first and second. Derek Smith then walked and Lincoln went to their bull pen.

The Saltdogs turned to Kaohi Downing to face Carlton Salters who pinch hit in the seventh. Salters hit a fly to center to get Bernal home and it was 3-2 Lincoln. The South Shore sent up pinch hitter Michael Vaughn for Ryan Brockett. Vaughn was rung up on a close check swing and the game was over.

The South Shore bats stayed silent for most of the game as Lincoln started Jessie Smith (1-0) retired 15 straight at one point getting the win. The right hander held the RailCats offense in check before tiring in the seventh. The Saltdogs got all their runs in the fifth off of RailCats starter Andy Roberts (0-1). Roberts walked the eight and nine men in the order before retiring Matt Forgatch on a sac bunt. The RailCats elected to walk Brian Joynt to load the bases. Jon Gaston then drove in a pair with a hot smash down the first base line and it was 2-0. Kevin Osaki then came and appeared to have CJ Ziegler bounce into a play at the plate but Joynt was ruled safe and it was 3-0 Lincoln.

Before the RailCats comeback Osaki worked 2.2 IP of scoreless relief. Downing (1) picked up the save for the Saltdogs who are now 4-2 while the RailCats are 3-4. The two teams will play game the final game of the series Thursday at Haymarket Park with game time at 6:35 pm. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsbaseball.com. The RailCats return home Friday night in a 7:10pm matchup against the Kansas City T-Bones at US Steel Yard.
