Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, Md.-The Frederick Keys rallied in the ninth inning against Salem closer Austin Maddox, but the orange and black left the tying run on third base as the Red Sox earned a 5-4 win on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. It was Frederick's first loss in a one-run home game this year, and just the team's fifth defeat in a game played on Stadium Drive this year. With a Keys loss and a doubleheader sweep by Wilmington, Orlando Gomez's team drops 3.5 games out of first in the CL North standings.

Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, the Keys put the first two on base against Maddox. Anthony Caronia reached on an error by second baseman Wendall Rijo, while Johnny Ruettiger followed with a double to right-center to put men at second and third for Gregory Lorenzo. Hitless on the night, the Keys eight-hole batter brought in Caronia, but Maddox struck out pinch-hitter Tucker Nathans and got Josh Hart to fly out to end the game.

Ending the night 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position the Keys also had a chance to pull ahead in the sixth. A leadoff double by Trey Mancini and a single by Jeff Kemp set up a chance for Caronia with one out. The Orlando native capitalized with a base hit, but Red Sox reliever Taylor Grover shut down the rally, getting a strikeout and a flyout to minimize the damage.

Salem benefited from strong situational hitting all night, and grabbed a quick 2-0 lead off Keys starter Mitch Horacek. Jose Vinicio doubled on the first pitch of the game and quickly scored on a soft single through the right side by Tzu-Wei Lin. One batter later, Sam Travis added the second RBI base knock of the inning to make it 2-0 Red Sox. For the game, Salem went 4-for-9 with runners at second or third.

Adrian Marin cut the deficit in half in the home-first with a solo home run to left off Denny Bautista, while a double and an error by Rijo evened the count. Salem grabbed the lead to stay in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Kevin Heller before adding insurance in the eighth on a double and an RBI single by Jake Romanski.

Horacek (3-5) suffered his third loss in four starts, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out a pair and did not walk a batter. Bautista (1-0) picked up the win for the Red Sox giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 5.1 innings. The former big leaguer walked two and struck out a pair. Maddox allowed an unearned run in the ninth to earn his seventh save.

The Keys and the Red Sox continue their three-game series on Thursday night at Nymeo Field. Lefty Chris Lee (0-0, 1.80) makes the start for the Keys and will be countered by Red Sox righty Ty Buttrey (3-0, 2.25). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m from Nymeo Field and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. It is Bark in the Park presented by CARE, while the Maryland Pride Tour makes its first stop in Frederick. Maryland coaches Randy Edsall, Mark Turgeon, Steve Aird and Kerry McCoy will all be in attendance and will sign autographs from 7:15-8:15 p.m. For ticket information, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
