Normal CornBelters News Release

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, broke open a pitcher's duel with a big final inning on offense and captured a 5-1 win in 11 innings on Wednesday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.

Pitchers ruled for the first five innings, but the CornBelters broke through in the sixth with a two-out single to center by Richard Lucas to score Pat McKenna.

The Boomers used a two-out rally in the eighth inning to tie the contest at 1-1 when Justin Vasquez walked and scored on a triple to the right field corner by Tillman Pugh.

Schaumburg almost ended the game in the 10th when a double by Michael Valadez into the right field corner rolled out of play, forcing Stephen Rogers to stop at third base, and the frame ended one batter later with both men stranded.

The CornBelters earned the win by loading the bases in the 11th inning as Ozney Guillen cleaned them with a triple to right center. Victor Beriguete then retired the Boomers in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win.

Horatio Acosta (1-0) pitched the final three innings for the win. Clark Labitan (1-1) took the loss. Starters Kevin Johnson for the Belters and Eddie Cody for the Boomers were solid through their efforts into the later innings but did not receive decisions as Johnson gave up just three hits and one run with three walks and six strikeouts.

The CornBelters conclude the series in Schaumburg with a 7:30 p.m. first pitch on Thursday with right-handers on the mound, Mike Schweiss (1-1, 2.07 ERA) for Normal and Edwin Carl (0-0, 4.09) for the Boomers. Pre-game begins at 7:20 on WJBC-AM 1230 and WJBC.com with a listen-live link also found at www.normalbaseball.com.
