CONNELLSVILLE, PA - The Keystone Ice Miners announced on Wednesday that goaltender Alex Blankenburg has committed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha's NCAA Division I program for the 2015-16 season. Blankenburg becomes the third member of the 2014-15 graduating class to commit to an NCAA program, the second to a Division I school.

Blankenburg, a native of Washington, MI, appeared in 86 regular season games over three NAHL seasons with the Fighting Falcons (and then) Ice Miners organization. He finished with a career record of 44-27-3 with a 2.23 goals against average and a .929 save percentage. Blankenburg appeared in five playoff games and represented the organization twice at the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament (2014 and 2015).

"We are very excited and happy that Alex has committed to University of Nebraska-Omaha," said head coach and general manager Michael Gershon. "Alex has been a leader on and off the ice for this organization from day one. He always came to the rink ready to put the work in to get better every day. He never stopped working to reach his goal of playing Division I."

The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks are members of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and made their first NCAA Frozen Four appearance this past season, losing in the semifinal round to eventual National Champion Providence College.

The 2014-15 Ice Miners now have the unique distinction of both of its goaltenders gaining NCAA DI commitments. Nick Kossoff committed to Lake Superior State (WCHA) in December 2014. "Alex and Nick pushed each other and for both of our goalies to be playing Division I hockey next year is special," Gershon said. "Our goalie coach, Sean Moloney, did a great job with both goalies and we are pleased that Alex will become our latest Division I commitment."

Blankenburg is the fourth overall member of the 2014-15 Keystone Ice Miners to secure a DI commitment joining Kossoff (Lake Superior State) and forwards Jacob Coleman (Robert Morris) and Cameron Smith (Dartmouth).
