Ottawa Champions News Release

Ottawa, ON - Matt Tenaglia continued his torrid start to the season on Wednesday, drilling a grand slam in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Ottawa Champions' fell 6-5 to the Rockland Boulders.

It was the second homerun of the season for the rookie third basemen, and his first professional grand slam.

Ottawa starter Andrew Werner threw six mostly solid innings on Wednesday, but one pitch in the second inning quickly put the Champions in a hole they couldn't quite dig themselves out of.

Trouble started when, after loading the bases on two base hits and a walk, he hit Giuseppe Papaccio to force in one run, then gave up a grand slam to Marcus Nidiffer.

Werner (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings, while striking out four and walking three.

Rockland starter, and winner, Richard Salazar (2-0) was almost unhittable during his five innings, giving up only two hits while striking out nine and walking one.

Ottawa had a good chance to score in the fifth when Francisco Sosa worked a leadoff walk and Bryce Massanari ripped a single to left putting runners at first and second, but Chris Winder and Kyle Brandenburg struck out, and Matt Tenaglia flied out to centre.

They finally broke through in the sixth off reliever Nate Roe when Roberto Ramirez led off with a walk, went to third on a one out single by Sebastien Boucher, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jon Talley.

Champions' relievers Joe Riley and Alan DeRatt each pitched an inning of scoreless relief in the loss.

The finale of the four game series goes tomorrow at 7:05 pm at Provident Bank Park, with Wilmer Font (1-0) on the mound for Ottawa against Rockland starter Stephen Harrold (1-0).
