Darrell "Skip" Handelsman Guides Bullfrogs for Second Straight Season
May 27, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- Last season Bullfrogs Field Manager, Darrell "Skip" Handelsman, picked up his 600th career victory. A feat no one else has accomplished in the Northwoods League, the tenured California-native brings an aggressive coaching style that includes lots of stolen bases and hit and run plays to Green Bay for the second straight season.
After a strong finish in 2014, Handelsman has recruited another group of players that he's picked up from all over the United States. He also doesn't care where they come from. The Bullfrogs sport a host of talented athletes from all levels including NJCAA, Europe, and NCAA Div. I, II, and III. The Bullfrogs also return a great deal of players from last season, including catcher Franco Guardascione, shortstop Matthew De La Rosa, and third-year Bullfrog, opening-day pitcher Garrett Harrison. All are excited to play again for Skip Handelsman.
"It's a lot of playing time for the guys here initially so it's a chance to show what they can do," said Handelsman. "They can develop into a role and spot on our team."
At the beginning of this season, there is no better Manager to deal with the tumultuous time period in which the full roster is still unfilled. With 17 active roster players, the Bullfrogs will be welcoming more players over the upcoming weeks. With a full 72-game schedule, Handelsman reminds his players to think about the process more than the results.
"It's a marathon, not a sprint. The league is not going to be won in the first 10 days," said Handelsman. "It'll be up to myself and the coaches to put these guys in positions where they are going to be successful."
Handelsman knows a lot about how to win ball games.
In nine seasons in the Coastal Plain League, he won 288 games. Prior to that, he had stops in Kenosha, Waterloo, and Madison in which he won championships with the Bucks in 2002 and then again with the Mallards in 2004. He's coached big leaguers including Bobby Kielty and Clint Barmes. And with the Bullfrogs in 2015, the process of culminating the best roster becomes easier with his experience.
"We have guys coming back that have been here and know how we like to play," said Handelsman. "They'll be prepared for what lies ahead and if we can get through the first 10 days to get to our complete roster, I feel good about our prospects for 2015."
Group tickets, season tickets and 7-game packages are on sale now. The Bullfrogs off-season hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. For more information please visit www.greenbaybullfrogs.com.
