Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - LHP Brad Wieck retired 14 Asheville Tourists in a row to lead the Savannah Sand Gnats to a 5-1 victory Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Wieck allowed a run in the first inning to the Tourists (19-25), but little else in his 6.2 innings. From the end of the first inning through one out in the sixth, Wieck retired 14 batters in a row. Wieck's 6.2 innings tied a career-high, and his nine strikeouts equaled his second-best mark of 2015.
The Gnats (20-25) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to regain the lead for good. The first run scored on a wild pitch by starter Helms Rodriguez and the second on line drive single smashed into left field by right fielder Wuilmer Becerra.
Savannah took advantage of three walks and two wild pitches by Rodriguez to score three runs in the third. Catcher Tomas Nido finished the inning's scoring with a two-run double into left field.
Becerra finished 2-for-4 with a single, a double and an RBI.
The Sand Gnats and Asheville Tourist will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will start RHP Casey Meisner (3-1, 1.93), while Asheville will trot RHP Ryan Castellani (0-3, 3.38) to the mound. Tomorrow will be Jewish Heritage Night and gates will open at 6 PM.
