Varner Keys Dragons Shutout Win over Cubs

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Seth Varner fired seven shutout innings and Jimmy Pickens belted a home run as the Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 4-0 on Tuesday night. A crowd of 8,750 attended at Fifth Third Field.
Varner (5-3) earned the win to become the Dragons first five-game winner of the season. The former star at Miami University and Clermont Northeastern High School in Batavia, Ohio faced only one batter over the minimum. He allowed three hits, but induced two double play balls. He did not issue a walk and struck out five.
The Dragons scored in the first inning to take an early lead when Pickens lifted a solo home run to left field with one out to make it 1-0. It was Pickens' first homer of the season. The Dragons added to their lead in the second when Luis Gonzalez walked and scored from first on Paul Kronenfeld's double to right-center field to bring the score to 2-0.
The Dragons got their offense going again in the seventh. Kronenfeld singled to right with one out to start the rally. Jonathan Reynoso reached on an infield single to third, and Ronald Bueno followed with a hit to right to bring in Kronenfeld and make it 3-0. Reynoso eventually scored on Pickens' infield single to give the Dragons a 4-0 lead.
Reliever Jake Paulson replaced Varner to start the eighth inning and completed the shutout. In his two innings of work, Paulson allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one.
The Dragons collected 10 hits. Kronenfeld was 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Reynoso had two hits and scored a run. Brian O'Grady had a double.
The Dragons remained three games out of first place but climbed to within two games of the wildcard in the Eastern Division with 24 games to play in the first half race. They are in a three-way tie for third with Lake County and West Michigan.
The Dragons host the Cubs again on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Mark Armstrong (2-1, 2.76) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Trevor Clifton (1-3, 3.31).

Notes: Injured Dragons Aristides Aquino (broken wrist) and Ty Washington (shoulder) returned to the Reds spring training complex in Goodyear, Arizona on Tuesday. They will continue their rehabilitation at the facility in Goodyear...The Dragons improved their home record to 13-7...The Dragons picked up their third shutout win of the season...The Dragons are 18-3 when scoring at least four runs in a game this season (9-0 at home)...The Dragons are 18-7 in games in which they do not allow an unearned run.
