Evansville Otters News Release

Avon, OH- Apparently a delay of 18 minutes was the perfect thing for the Evansville Otters (8-2) and Efrain Nieves, as the Otters rode the best starting pitching performance by any starter to a 7-0 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers (4-6) at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, OH.

Nieves (2-0, 0.00) was masterful on the mound, starting the game and finishing the game for the Otters, scattering seven hits while striking out six and walking two in the complete game performance. The Otters defense behind him turned two double plays, one of which he started himself, and Josh Allen made a leaping grab to highlight the great overall game by the Otters.

Shayne Houck hit his first road home run of the season, a three run liner over the left field wall that pushed an Otters 1-0 lead to 4-0 in the third inning. The Otters scored another run later in the inning on an RBI grounder by Allen, who continued his tear later in the game with an RBI single, going 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI.

Jaime Del Valle doubled for the third time in his last two games while chipping in with an RBI groundout in addition to his solid work behind the plate for the Otters. Kurt Wertz Jr. scored twice and doubled in the game, but John Schultz one-upped him with two doubles of his own while reaching base three times thanks to a walk while also scoring a run.

The Otters' Nike Balog extended his hitting streak to eight games with an eighth inning double while Ronnie Richardson pushed his to five with a single in the third. For Wertz Jr. and Allen, their on-base streaks improved to eight and seven games respectively.

After sweeping the last two series and taking the first game of this one against the Crushers, the Otters will look to make in eight in a row with a morning game tomorrow with first pitch scheduled at 9:35 CDT A.M. and you can catch all of the action on WUEV 91.5 FM or on our website with the pregame show starting at 9:15 AM.
