CornBelters Surge to Win at Schaumburg

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, captured the 100th win for manager Brooks Carey in a 9-4 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers on Tuesday night at Boomers Stadium.
The CornBelters scored twice in the first inning, aided by a pair of Boomers errors. With one out, Mark Micowski was hit by a pitch and he went to third on a double to the left field corner by Pat McKenna. Sam Judah's grounder to first resulted in a wild throw to the plate, scoring both runners.
Santiago Chirino built the lead to 3-0 by leading off the second inning with a home run over the left field wall. An RBI double to the right field corner by Aaron Dudley with one out in the third put the Belters ahead 4-0, scoring McKenna who reached via leadoff walk, followed by a two-run homer to right by Ozney Guillen in the frame for a 6-0 advantage.
The Boomers entered the scoring column in the fourth inning which led off with a double from Jordan Dean and a single from Alexi Colon, followed by a sacrifice fly to left by Ryan Tuntland.
The Belters loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and plated a run on a McKenna floater to right for a 7-1 lead. The Boomers countered in their sixth by also loading the bases and scoring on a wild pitch followed by a two-run triple by Justin Vasquez to cut their deficit to 7-4.
The CornBelters increased the lead to 8-4 when Cameron Monger homered just over the left field wall in the eighth inning. McKenna went yard over the center field fence to lead off the ninth inning to set the final score.
Chris Carmain (2-0) went 5 2/3 innings for the win, giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Scott Plaza (0-1) went 5 1/3 innings and took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The Belters continue the series in Schaumburg with an 11 a.m. first pitch on Wednesday as Kevin Johnson (0-1, 8.21 ERA) starts for Normal while the Boomers give the ball to Eddie Cody (2-0, 0.69) in a battle of right-handers.
