Bowie Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox opened the series against Erie with a 4-2 win Tuesday night to snap a two-game losing streak. Bowie welcomed back two Orioles former first round draft picks with Brandon Snyder (2005) back from the Disabled List and Matt Wieters (2007) on a MLB rehab assignment as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. Those two players would be responsible for three of Bowie's four runs, including the game-winning runs in the eighth inning.
On the mound for his Baysox debut, LHP Jhonathan Ramos pitched five strong innings, giving up three hits and one walk while fanning six batters in a no decision. Ramos was filling in for Orioles top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy, who was scratched after experiencing soreness in his shoulder this week.
The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning after Mike Yastrzemski hit a bloop single into right field extending his hitting streak to seven games. Wieters followed with a ground ball base hit to right field, which moved Yastrzemski to third and Snyder singled to bring Yastrzemski home and give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
The Baysox held their lead until the SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the sixth when Marcel Prado came into replace Ramos. Erie got things started when Dean Green hit a long double to left-center field followed by a walk to Wade Gaynor. James Robbins grounded into a fielder's choice to move Dean Green to third and force Wade Gaynor out at second. Curt Powell singled to bring Dean Green home and tie the game at 1-1.
Erie took the lead in the top of the seventh with a lead-off single from Harold Castro. Wynton Bernard moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt and Jason Krizan moved Castro to third with another ground out. Connor Harrell knocked in his 15th RBI of the season with a single to bring Castro home and give the SeaWolves a 2-1 lead.
Whit Mayberry came in to pitch for Erie starter Tommy Collier in the bottom of the seventh and the Baysox quickly capitalized off of Mayberry. Michael Burgess tripled and Ozzie Martinez brought him home with a single to even the game at 2-2.
The Baysox then relied on a pair of players with Big League experience to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Wieters hit another single to right field and Snyder hit his third home run of the year to give the Baysox a 4-2 lead. Those two runs were the winning and final runs of the game.
Mychal Givens closed the game out for the Baysox, earning his eighth save of the year and Gene Escat (1-0, 2.37) took the win for the Baysox after throwing a scoreless eighth inning. Mayberry earned his third loss of the year.
Wieters had a strong first game in his return, going 2-4, with a run scored. He also managed to catch one runner, Erie's Curt Powell, stealing in the top of the eighth on a throw to shortstop Ozzie Martinez for the final out in the top half of the inning.
The Baysox will host another Oriole tomorrow in the second game of the series at Prince George's Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Bud Norris will take the mound for Bowie as he works his way back from the disabled list. Norris is 1-4 with a 9.88 ERA in six starts for the Orioles.
