Memphis Redbirds News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Redbirds were able to extend their season-high winning streak to eight games on Monday night in Fresno, defeating the Grizzlies 5-1.
With the win, Memphis pulled to within a game of the .500 mark, improving to 22-23 on the season. The Redbirds' eight-game winning streak is the longest in the Pacific Coast League, and is also the club's longest since winning nine in a row from August 9-18 of 2014. The nine-game mark set last season is an all-time franchise record.
Redbirds' starter Nick Greenwood was able to help Memphis' cause, allowing only one run in five innings of work while filling in for the injured Marco Gonzales, who was placed on the disabled list prior to Monday night's game (retroactive to May 21). Greenwood would allow a run in the first inning, but was able to recover for the Redbirds. The southpaw's five innings pitched mark a season-high in his four starts in 2015.
The Redbirds offense was led by a three-RBI night from backstop Cody Stanley. The Memphis catcher drove in Greg Garcia in the top of the second inning, while doubling home his second and third runs of the contest two innings later in the top of the fourth.
Further padding the Redbird lead, Stephen Piscotty led off the top of the fifth inning with his sixth home run of the season. Two frames later, Ty Kelly extended the Memphis lead to four after roping a double off the left field wall, scoring Stanley.
The Memphis bullpen closed out the final four innings in relief of Nick Greenwood. Kurt Heyer, Justin Wright, and Keith Butler were able to shut down the potent Fresno offense, holding the Grizzlies scoreless.
Memphis will hand the ball to Tyler Lyons (3-1, 2.64) on Tuesday night, as the Redbirds look to match the club's record nine-game winning streak. Lyons notched a complete game in his last outing, recording all 27 outs himself in a 4-2 victory over Sacramento. He will be opposed by Fresno's Asher Wojciechowski (2-0, 4.86), with first pitch from Chukchansi Park set for 9:05pm CT.
