Finally: Revs Hold Off Patriots To Snap Streak

May 25, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution put an end to their losing streak on Memorial Day evening, holding off the Somerset Patriots for a 5-4 victory at Santander Stadium. The win snaps a six-game losing streak as the Revs avoid being swept on their seven-game homestand, while it also ends an 11-game home skid. The Revs will look to continue their road success, having won seven of their last nine on the road, when they begin a seven-game road trip in Camden on Wednesday night.

York jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the first inning on a pair of two-out RBI singles by Bryan Pounds and Andres Perez, grabbing an early 2-0 lead. York added another run in the second inning as Wilson Valdez legged out an attempted double play for an RBI fielder's choice and a 3-0 lead. The lead grew in the fourth when Mikey Reynolds reached on an infield single to lead off the inning, stole second, and scored on a Valdez single to right to make it 4-0.

Somerset scored its only run off Revs starter Anthony Lerew in the fifth inning as James Skelton delivered an RBI single to right. Lerew avoided further damage, however, retiring the third through fifth hitters in order to strand two additional runners.

York responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Luis De La Cruz RBI double high off the left-center fence, building a 5-1 lead.

Somerset clawed back with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, scoring on an RBI double to left-center by Robert Andino and an RBI single to right-center from Scott Cousins, trimming York's lead to 5-3. Reliever Leyson Septimo entered to record the final out and strand a pair of runners, however, while also tossing a perfect seventh.

Stephen Penney came up big out of the Revs bullpen in the eighth, striking out the side to leave the tying two runners at second and third base.

The Revs held on for the thrilling victory in the ninth inning, after the Patriots built an immediate threat. Thomas Neal led off with a single off the Arch Nemesis, and Chris Marrero followed with a base hit down the left field line. The play was disputed by Revs manager Mark Mason after the ball made contact with Somerset's bullpen catcher, but Marrero was awarded a double, giving Somerset runners at second and third with no outs. Mat Gamel followed with an RBI groundout to second, moving the tying run to third with one out. Revs closer Josh Judy then came up with a huge strikeout of David Vidal for the second out. Nate Spears then drove a fly ball deep to left field, but Revs left fielder Brandon Boggs made a great running grab against the wall to secure the victory as Judy notched his fifth save.

Lerew (3-1) earned the win, allowing just one run and three hits over five innings, surviving an uncharacteristic five walks.

Patriots starter Lucas Irvine (1-4) took the loss, charged with four runs on nine hits over four innings.

The Revs out-hit the Patriots 12-10, while both teams stranded 12 runners.

Notes: Penney's appearance marked the 177th of his Revs career, moving within four of tying Corey Thurman's club record (181)... Perez reached base all four times, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks... Pounds extended his hitting streak to eight consecutive games... York earns its first win in seven tries against Somerset this season... Wednesday's opener in Camden is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch... Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
