Missions Split Twin Bill with Frisco

May 25, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio settled for a split in its Memorial Day doubleheader with Frisco despite two terrific outings by its starting pitchers.

The Missions struck early in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the third on Diego Goris' two-run double to right off starter Andrew Faulkner (2-3). The Goris two bagger snapped San Antonio's scoreless streak at 17 innings.

San Antonio broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run rally against reliever Kyle Lotzkar. The Missions stretched their lead to 4-0 early in the frame courtesy of consecutive solo homers by Alberth Martinez and Jason Hagerty. It was the first time in 2015 that San Antonio went back-to-back. Trea Turner capped scoring later in the inning with a two-run single up the middle.

The offensive support was more than enough for Justin Hancock, who picked up his fourth straight victory with five innings of two-hit ball. Hancock (4-1) struck out six against just two walks, throwing 59 of his 93 pitches for strikes.

Relievers Brandon Alger and Adam Cimber (1st Double-A save) combined on the final two innings, capping San Antonio's 6-0 win and league-leading seventh shutout.

In game two, San Antonio wasted a terrific start by Ryan Butler, who was taking the Wolff Stadium mound for the first time. Butler allowed just one run (Jorge Alfaro's RBI double in the fourth) on three hits and three walks, while striking out three over six innings.

Frisco took advantage of Butler's exit in the seventh, plating seven against reliever Luis De La Cruz, highlighted by two-run homers by both Joey Gallo (8th of the season) and Alfaro (3rd).

Edwar Cabrera and relievers Josh McElwee (2-1) and Cody Ege (1st save) combined on a six-hit shutout as Frisco won going away 8-0 to take the series.

Butler (0-2) was the hard-luck loser.

San Antonio (18-25) hits the road for a six-game road trip, beginning Tuesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, AR when they face the Arkansas Travelers for the first time this season. Bryan Rodriguez (3-5, 4.43) will get the ball for the Missions in Tuesday night's opener, while the Travs counter with fellow righty Alan Busenitz (1-4, 6.63). Following its series with Arkansas, San Antonio will next face Northwest Arkansas for another three-game set.

Notes: Turner (1-for-3 in each game Monday) extended his hit streak to a season-best 11 games and his on-base streak to a career-high 24 games.
