Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Sunny skies shined down upon Ashford University Field on Memorial Day, a far cry from Sunday afternoon, which saw the third game of a four game series between the Clinton LumberKings (21-24) and Burlington Bees (22-23) rained out. A doubleheader sweep by the hometown LumberKings capped off a 5-3 homestand vs. the league leading River Bandits and the Bees.

The teams combined for 15 hits in game one, just one went for extra bases. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Nelson Ward hit is second home run of the season. Clinton led 1-0 until a two-out RBI single by Andrew Daniel in the top of the third.

Clinton responded immediately after it gave up the lead, as the LumberKings plated four runs vs. Justin Anderson (L, 3-2) in the bottom of the third. Four straight singles by Daniel Torres, Arby Fields, Aaron Barbosa, and Chris Mariscal, paired with a sacrifice fly and a throwing error put Clinton ahead 5-1, the eventual final.

Lukas Schiraldi (W, 4-3) dazzled in the complete game win. Schiraldi allowed seven hits and walked only one in Clinton's first complete game pitching performance of the season. The former Longhorn is now 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA (1 ER, 14.2 IP) in two starts vs. Burlington.

Game two had a much closer feel to it than the first half of the twin bill. The game remained scoreless into the fifth inning when Clinton struck first for the third time in the four game series. With one out, Wayne Taylor doubled on a fly ball to center field and scored on Taylor Zeutenhorst's RBI single.

After spot starter Jarrett Brown (ND) allowed just one hit over four shutout innings, Osmer Morales surrendered a game tying home run to Andrew Daniel to begin the sixth inning. It was Daniel's second home run of the series and team leading sixth of the season.

Knotted at one after a perfect top of the seventh by Nick Kiel (W, 1-2), Burlington manager Chad Tracy went to his closer Eduardo Paredes (L, 0-1) in an effort to extend the game into extra innings. Paredes issued a leadoff walk to Zeutenhorst, and after a sacrifice bunt by Gianfranco Wawoe, Arby Fields pinch ran for the first baseman. Two batters later, Mariscal flared a ball into shallow right field, as Fields scored the game-winning run without a throw to the plate.

With hits in both games of the doubleheader, Mariscal extended his hit streak to a season high eight games, while Barbosa lengthened his to seven games. Estarlyn Morales went 3-3 in game two, and now leads the team in hitting at .280.

Off of a successful 5-3 homestand, the LumberKings will head out on the road for seven games, three vs. the Peoria Chiefs and four vs. the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The games Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at Dozer Park in Peoria will all start at 7:00 CT. The series opener will see Zack Littell (1-0, 4.22) start for Clinton and Daniel Poncedeleon (4-0, 1.82) start for the Chiefs. The LumberKings broadcast of Tuesday night's game can be heard only on LumberKings.com and the TuneIn App, while the final two games of the series will also be on WCCI 100.3 FM and WCCIRadio.com.
