Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers claimed both seven-inning games of Monday's doubleheader against the Springfield Cardinals, both by the score of 4-2, before 4,471 fans at Hammons Field.

Game 1:

The Travelers (23-19) came out swinging against RHP Nick Petree (L, 1-4) in the top of the first inning. 2B Sherman Johnson and SS Eric Stamets sparked the charge with back-to-back base hits. RF Cal Towey then struck with a two-run double, bringing in both baserunners for the early lead. After a groundout moved Towey to third, he tried to score on a groundball to first by DH Wade Hinkle, but 1B David Washington fired it home to throw out Towey at the plate. With Hinkle at first base and two away, LF Kentrail Davis knocked a single, before an RBI base hit from 3B Drew Maggi brought in Hinkle for the 3-0 lead.

Petree got on track by retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced through three scoreless innings from the second through the fourth, but the Travelers added one in the top of the fifth. With one down, Johnson reached on an error before moving around to third on a single by Stamets. Towey then drove an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, plating Johnson for his third RBI of the game to make it 4-0.

Arkansas RHP Albert Suarez (W, 4-3) limited the Cardinals (14-29) to just two hits through his first five scoreless innings, but Springfield got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. 2B Breyvic Valera worked a leadoff walk, before racing all the way home one out later on an RBI double by SS Alex Mejia, chipping the deficit to 4-1.

The Cardinals kept the comeback going in the bottom of the seventh, the final regulation inning in the doubleheader format. DH Anthony Garcia started the stanza with a single, moving to second base on a wild pitch. Suarez retired C Michael Ohlman with a pop out for the inning's first out, and then gave way on the mound to LHP Chris O'Grady (S, 1). After a strikeout brought the Cardinals to their final out, 3B Patrick Wisdom pulled an RBI single through the left side to bring home Garcia. Wisdom, though, was retired on the bases after a wide turn past first base, and the Travelers hung on for the 4-2 win.

Game 2:

Cardinals RHP Chris Thomas (L, 0-2) and Arkansas LHP Tyler DeLoach (W, 3-2) were the starters for Game 2 and alternated three scoreless innings apiece to start the contest. Arkansas (24-19), though, cracked the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. With one away, RF Cal Towey placed a triple inside the left field line. He then darted home on an RBI single by 3B Brian Hernandez, lifting the Travs into the 1-0 lead. After the base hit, RHP Corey Baker took over on the mound. 1B Wade Hinkle and LF Kentrail Davis, however, worked a pair of walks to load the bases with only one down. After Baker battled back with a strikeout, DH Raywilly Gomez knocked a two-run single to stretch the advantage to 3-0.

The Travelers stayed on the attack in the top of the fifth. With RHP Jordan Swagerty on the mound, each of the first three Travelers worked walks to load the bases with no outs. RHP Ronnie Shaban took over to face 3B Brian Hernandez and induced a quick pop out to second base for the inning's first out. 1B Wade Hinkle also hit the ball in the air, but drove it far enough to left field for the RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Johnson for the four-run lead. Shaban battled back right away with an inning-ending pop out to right, minimizing the damage and closing the inning with the Travs lead at just 4-0.

The Cardinals (14-30) again rallied with their backs against the wall in the bottom of the seventh. With DeLoach still on the mound, DH Jeremy Hazelbaker led off with a double. 3B Patrick Wisdom promptly plated Hazelbaker with an RBI double, getting the Cardinals on the board and extending his season-high hitting streak to 11 games. DeLoach responded with a pair of outs, but CF Charlie Tilson kept the Cardinals alive with an RBI triple to left-center, scoring Wisdom and bringing Springfield within two runs. However, DeLoach finished what he started with a strikeout against 2B Alex Mejia, closing the 4-2 win for Arkansas.
