Late Rally Dooms Mudcats Again in 5-1 Loss

WILMINGTON, DE - Joe Odom hit a solo home run in the second and the Mudcats took a 1-0 lead into the seventh, but the Blue Rocks rallied for five late runs to defeat Carolina 5-1 on Monday afternoon at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington D.E. The loss was Carolina's tenth straight and clinched a Wilmington sweep.
The loss extended Carolina's losing streak to 10 straight games. The current losing streak is is the longest in franchise history since Carolina dropped 11 straight in 2010. The franchise record for consecutive losses is 12.
Odom's home run was his first of the season and it put the Mudcats (19-22) up first against Wilmington (25-18) starter Cody Reed. Carolina led 1-0 after the second, but did not score again in the game. They finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the loss.
The Blue Rocks, meanwhile, were held scoreless through the sixth, but would rally for four runs and four hits in the seventh. Blair Walters started for the Mudcats and faced two batters in the seventh before leaving the game. He walked a batter and gave up a hit in the seventh and reliever Mike Nesseth took over with two men on base. Nesseth (BS, 1) went on to allow both inherited runners to score and allowed three hits in the inning while getting two outs.
Walters (1-1, 3.00) took the loss after allowing just two runs on two hits over six plus innings pitched. Nesseth was charged with a blown save and allowed two runs over 2/3 inning pitched. Walters held the Blue Rocks to just one hit over the first six innings and had retired 11 straight before pitching in the seventh.
Reed went five innings for the Blue Rocks and did not earn a decision. He allowed just one run on four hits while walking two and collecting two strikeouts. Ashton Goudeau relieved Reed in the sixth and pitched three scoreless innings while earning the win. Goudeau (1-0, 0.00) allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out three in the victory.
Nesseth retired the first batter he faced in the seventh before seeing the Blue Rocks tie the game on a squeeze bunt laid down by Logan Moon. Cam Gallagher followed with a two-run home run to left and the Blue Rocks took a 3-1 lead. Nesseth also allowed a RBI single to Santiago Nessy in the seventh before leaving the game. Andy Otero finished the seventh and allowed on unearned run in the eighth.
The Mudcats managed to get two men on base with no outs in the ninth, but did not score in the inning. Wilmington's Robinson Yambati finished it by getting Keith Curcio to hit into a double play to end the game.
Carolina has a scheduled off day on Tuesday, but will return to action on Wednesday at Five County Stadium for game one of a three game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Wednesday's game will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Zebulon.
