Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons claimed their second game of a five-game set in Huntsville, Ala., Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 win over the Biloxi Shuckers. Birmingham out-hit the home team 10-7 as three Barons recorded a multi-hit contest.

The Shuckers struck first in the first inning with one run, and despite a 4-21 when the opponent scores first, Birmingham responded with two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage. A wild pitch with two on allowed the speedy Jacob May to score from third, and Christian Marrero lined a single to center to score Tim Anderson.

Biloxi answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead with starting pitcher Frankie Montas on the mound. The right-hander exited after a scoreless fifth, trailing by the same score. Montas gave up just two earned runs on four hits while a third scored unearned.

Newly-added reliever Blake Smith entered the game in the sixth and gave up a solo home run to Brandon Macias as the Shuckers went up 4-2, but it would be the final run of the night for Biloxi. Birmingham put up a three-spot in the seventh to go up 5-4. A Joey DeMichele single plated Marrero, and Jeremy Farrell scored on one of Marcus Lemon's three hits just one batter later. May capped off the inning's scoring with a single to center to score DeMichele. The Barons added an insurance run in the eighth. Danny Hayessingled on a liner to left to score Anderson.

Along with Lemon's three base-knocks, May and Marrero each had two hits. Anderson also swiped his 16th stolen base of the year, putting him seven behind the Southern League's stolen base leader - May at 23. The Birmingham defense also turned three double plays - the second time they've completed a twin-killing thrice in a game on the season.

The series wraps up Monday with a 1:10 p.m. first pitch. Tyler Danish (4-1, 3.98 ERA) is on the bump for Birmingham and lefty Hobbs Johnson (2-1, 2.70 ERA) gets the start for the Shuckers. The game can be heard live on WERFM.com.

The Barons return to Birmingham May 27 for the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field. They host the Jacksonville Suns for five, with the final four contests played at Regions Field.
