Frederick Keys News Release
LYNCHBURG, Va.-The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that starting pitcher, Jarett Miller, has been promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. It is first time the Palmetto State native has been called up to Double-A, while he becomes the second member of the Keys to receive a promotion this year. The first, Anthony Caronia, rejoins Frederick from Triple-A Norfolk and takes Miller's spot on the roster.
In eight starts with the Keys, Miller went 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA over 36 innings. He allowed 39 hits, walked 26 and struck out 36. Opponents batted .281 against him. Miller's most recent outing came on Wednesday night at Myrtle Beach, where he allowed three runs on four hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out three and walked six. At the time of his call-up the 25-year-old led the Carolina League in free passes (26).
Signed by the Orioles as a minor league free agent in late-March, Miller spent his first four professional seasons with the Braves organization. As a member of the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2014, the right-hander went 8-9 with a 4.04 ERA over 29 games (28 starts). He tied for the league lead in games started, was third in innings pitched (151.1) tied for fourth in strikeouts (127) and placed ninth in ERA. He was originally selected by Atlanta in the 21st round of the 2011 draft out of UNC-Greensboro.
Caronia went 1-for-8 over three games with the Tides with a run scored. With the Keys this season, the Floridian is hitting .288 in 24 games with two doubles and nine RBIs. Outstanding for the orange and black in May, Caronia is batting .341 (15-for-44) with six RBIs and nine runs scored at the Advanced-A level this month. That includes a seven-game hit streak from May 4- 10.
The Frederick Keys continue their four-game set with the Lynchburg Hillcats on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander David Hess (2-2, 4.99) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Hillcats righty Michael Peoples (3-3, 6.55). First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. from City Stadium and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
