Jose Reyes Dominance Continues

Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: Domination is the only word to describe GreenJackets starting pitcher Jose Reyes (3-1 ERA 1.32) at this point in the season. Reyes, who started his seventh game of the year Saturday night, turned in another impressive six innings for the GreenJackets. As Reyes was confusing Tourist batters for most of the night, the Augusta GreenJackets (20-21) were able to put a few runs on the scoreboard to cruise to a two to zero victory over the Asheville Tourists (18-24).

In forty-one innings pitched, Jose Reyes has only allowed six earned runs for the entire season. Saturday night, Reyes kept up his pitching dominance by collecting his fifth game of the 2015 season when Reyes pitched five innings or more without allowing a earned run. While facing the Tourists, Reyes pitched six innings, struck out three, and only gave up two hits in the process.

As impressive as Jose Reye's start was on Saturday night, Tourist's pitcher Carlos Polanco kept pace with Reye's inning by inning. Polanco and Reyes put up scoreless frames up until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs in the fifth inning, the GreenJackets strung together three hits in a row from Jeremy Sy, Jonah Arenado, and Skyler Ewing to put up the first run of the game. Ewing's double to right field (Ewing's tenth of the year) allowed Sy to score from second base.

After Jose Reyes left the game at the end of sixth inning the GreenJackets bullpen took over on the mound, determined to maintain the lead to secure the victory for Reyes. Dusten Knight got into some trouble in the top of the seventh inning when an error by third baseman Travious Relaford loaded the bases with zero outs. The next batter for the Tourists, Max White hit a ground ball to second baseman Ryan Jones who was able to make the throw to home for the force out. Still with one out and the bases full, Dusten Knight had to dig deep for the GreenJackets. Knight would strike out Sean Dwyer and force Dom Nunez line out to center field to end the scoring threat.

Jonah Arenado was able to take some pressure off of the GreenJackets bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning by hitting a moon shot that landed over the left field fence of Lake Olmstead Stadium. The homerun was Arenado's team leading sixth of the year and placed the GreenJackets out in front two runs to zero at the end of the seventh inning.

Relief pitcher Ramon Del Obre and Carlos Alvarado (who pitched in the eighth and ninth innings) were able to retire the final six Tourist batters to seal the victory for the GreenJackets. The GreenJackets collected their third straight victory with a scoreboard line that read zero runs two hits and three errors for the Asheville Tourists and two runs, eight hits, and two errors for the Augusta GreenJackets. Jose Reyes improves to three and one on the season and Carlos Alvarado picked up his sixth save for 2015.
